Council Bluffs Public Library Hosts Educational Awareness Event Featuring Documentary on Juneteenth

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 5/30/2024

Council Bluffs, IA – The Council Bluffs Public Library is proud to announce an educational awareness event featuring the documentary “Our America: Black Freedom” on Tuesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by Preston Love, Jr. of Omaha, an esteemed American politician, professor, author, and activist.

“Our America: Black Freedom” delves into the historical origins of Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation to the last remaining enslaved persons in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865—two and a half years after the proclamation was signed. This documentary provides a profound look into this pivotal moment in American history and its lasting impact.

Preston Love, Jr., M.P.S., will guide a discussion following the screening. Love, Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Urban Development, has an extensive background in civil activism, African American history, economic development and voting rights and is deeply committed to fostering economic inclusion and community engagement.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the event, Love remarked, “I’ll be honored to host this event.”

This event is free and open to the public. The Council Bluffs Public Library invites community members 18 and older to join in this opportunity to learn about and reflect on the significance of Juneteenth.
