George Canning was born in 1818 in Berkshire, England. Mary A. Westall was also born in England around 1823. In 1840 George and Mary were married and in 1849 they immigrated to Council Bluffs. They lived in Council Bluffs for the rest of their lives.
George and Mary had 11 children 9 of whom survived to adulthood. George was a tailor by trade and both he and Mary were members of the Spiritualist Society.
The Cannings had a plot of land on Canning drive near Walnut Cemetery. Here they set up a small farm. In December 1895 some animals attacked his livestock and 4 large hogs and his entire stock chickens were killed.
Mrs. Canning died August of 1896 and Mr. Canning died in February 1898. Both are buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
