The Library will be closed Thursday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

Early Citizens of Council Bluffs - P C DeVol

Paul Coleman DeVol is the son of last month's profile, David and Delia DeVol. P.C. DeVol was born in 1836 in New York state. He came to Council Bluffs in 1847 with his parents. He went to school until he was 18 when he started to learn the tinners trade. In 1861 P.C. went into business with Milton Rogers for two years. After those two years he ran a successful stove and tinware business on his own.

P.C. DeVol married Katherine Swobe on February 4th, 1868. Together they had 6 children, 4 of whom survived to adulthood.

In 1883 formed a partnership with W.S. Wright. While maintaining the store in Council Bluffs, DeVol and Wright formed a jobbing business in Omaha under the name Rector, Wilhem and Company. The company dealt in wholesale hardware.

P.C. was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Royal Arcanum. Katherine DeVol was a founding member of the Women's Christian Association. The family were members of the First Presbyterian Church.

Katherine DeVol died April 18, 1930 at the age of 84.  P C Devol died December 23, 1906 at the age of 67.  Both are buried in Fairview Cemetery.
