Council Bluffs, IA - Railroads became the primary mode of long-distance transportation in the United States during the mid-to-late 1800s. However, as the railway network expanded, so did issues like theft, vandalism, robberies, labor conflicts, and trespassing. Many local law enforcement agencies were either nonexistent or too under-resourced to address these problems, leaving railroads to manage them independently.
On Monday, December 2, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., the Council Bluffs Public Library will host a program exploring this interesting topic. Patricia LaBounty, curator of the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, will present on the history of crime-fighting on the rails, how railroad special agents evolved over time and the specialized training required for the job.
This program is free and open to the public. For more information, visit our website at: https://www.councilbluffslibrary.org/event/law-order-railroad-history-railroad-police-2931
