The countdown to the installation of the newest Library location, Cochran Library Kiosk, is on! Books are being ordered for this opening collection and a lot of thought has gone into how to make this browsing collection, well, easy to browse! Unlike the bookshelves you are used to right now, you won’t be able to pull a book off the shelf, flip through it, read the back cover, and then put it back if you don’t want to check it out with the new Cochran Library Kiosk. Additionally there are limitations to the size of items that will fit in the kiosk! They can’t be too big and thick or too thin and odd shaped. The selectors for the various areas of the library collection have been hard at work measuring books and making sure that the titles are clear on the spines as that is the only thing you will get to read before checking out a book!
Support Services staff has also been hard at work processing all the new materials, about 500 new books in total, that will be the opening collection to fill the Cochran Kiosk. To make the browsing easy, we have created a color-coded system for browsability. Each item will have a colored piece of tape so that you will know if it is a youth book, young adult book, adult nonfiction, or adult fiction title. Additionally there will be a handful of DVDs available in the Cochran Library Kiosk. Luckily they have a completely different appearance!
Yellow for Youth Materials
Red for Young Adult Materials
Blue for Adult Nonfiction
Green for Adult Fiction
One more thing to know as you get ready to browse this collection is it won’t be in order! Unlike the shelves in the library, we can’t easily shift items if there is no more space to “shelve” in a row. We just have to add items where there are empty spaces in one of the 3 rows of shelves that you will see in the kiosk. This may take a little time to get used to for us and for you too! We hope that the handy color-coded system will help with that too.
A lot of thought has gone into what books and items we add to the Cochran Library Kiosk. We can’t wait for you to discover your next favorite read when it gets installed later this summer!
